Connecting Padfone to a TV
Using the Micro-HDMI port on the Padfone

The Padfone has a normal Micro-HDMI port on the side of it. This connector is mainly used to connect the display of the Padfone Station, but it is also possible to connect an external monitor/TV to it.

When you buy a regular Micro-HDMI (to full HDMI) cable, and you connect it, it won't work. This is due to the design of the phone, it doesn't allow the male end of the plug to fully slide in. But if you cut just about 2mm off on the right side of the plasic, it will slide in deeper, and connect perfectly.

When you connect the phone while in the launcher, you will see the phones display mirrored on te screen in full portrait mode on the TV. But as soon as you open an app, it automatically rotates to landscape mode. The only downside in my opinion is that every app runs in "phone mode". Pad only apps won't run, and apps that have support for tablet mode layouts are still shown in their phone mode layout.

Audio is (of course) also streamed to the TV, nothing special here, the quality is just what you expect. In my case my TV is connected directly to a 5.1 setup, which sounds very nice.

I know some people who just used scissors, or just cut it away very carfully with a small knife...

I had some kind of special tool laying around, don't know how it's called XD but you can pretty much use anything, it's just soft plastic...

Hi Marc,

I've followed your advice to cut just about 2mm off on the right side of the plasic.

When I connect the PadFone while in the launcher, I see the phones display mirrored on the external screen. But I can't get any sound, I'm still hearing the audio playing through the phones speaker!

I've tried it with several devices (my TV and my PC monitor), without any luck; I've connected the Micro-HDMI to the same HDMI-Cable which - regarding getting both VIDEO and AUDIO signals through it - works perfectly with my XBOX 360, so I don't think it is a hardware issue, and I've eben tried to install an app called "SoundAbout" that allows me to redirect the media output to "Aux Digital (HDMI)" - no success

Since you wrote "Audio is also streamed to the TV", could you please help me what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you in advance!

Hi MisterFloppy

It should work fine out of the box...

What firmware are you on? And does the phone redirect the audio to your Padfone Station fine?

Hi SparkyRih,

I'm using your firmware "PadFone_SR007-10.5.1.4_WW.zip", and I've no problems with the AUDIO when it is docked, I can hear the sound coming from the Padfone stations speaker.

What confuses me is that when connected to my TV or PC monitor via the "Micro-HDMI to HDMI cable", I can still hear the sound from the phones speaker... Shouldn't it at least be muted (like the way it is muted when docked in the PadFone station)? Is that an indication that the phone somehow "doesn't know" that is connected to a HDMI capable device (although, as I said, VIDEO is working fine)?

I just connected my first generation Padfone to my TV and it works just fine... Audio is muted on the phone and is redirected to the TV...

Only thing I can think of is that your HDMI cable is of an older version? Maybe the connectors in the plug don't correspond to newer versions? I'm not sure...

Hi SparkyRih,

SUCCESS!!!!!

You were right: after exchanging my HDMI cable, I am now able to hear sound! It's strange that the other HDMI cable was able to transmit AUDIO coming from my XBOX 360, but not from my PadFone; and the new HDMI cable is only working with my TV, but not with my PC monitor - however, with that I can live

Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction!

Mister Floppy
