Hi, newbie here so treat me gently ... Not got a Padfone but looking seriously at the Infinity. I've got a 2 1/2 year old HTC Desire HD at the moment, running 4.2.2, so due for an "upgrade". As the DHD was my first Android and touch screen phone I've now come to certain conclusions about what I would like to see from a device and the Infinity seems to meet those. But there are certain questions I have that I haven't seen the answer to, or at least a complete answer, and so hoped I could get them here.

a) getting the phone from Taiwan - I assume when I switch it on I'll have the option of 'British English' for the language right 'out of the box'?

b) I've seen mention of firmware updates. Are these 'over the air' ( OTA) or over the net?

c) cases. At some stage I'd like a case with keyboard (BT probably) but not seen a lot for the Infinity yet (though not done an exhaustive search as, as I said, I don't have one yet ... ). As it only varies in size fractionally from the PF2, do the PF2 cases fit OK? Any buttons/slots covered up?

d) Checking the frequencies it works at it would seem to be fine for the UK. Anyone got one over here and using it with no/any problems? (Not interested in 4G as it's only just being rolled out. I'd have to travel about 3 or 4 hours on the motorway to find the first 4G area in the UK ... ).

e) USB. Do the PF2 cables work on the Infinity? And if a cable converts to USB, either full size or mini/micro, does it support USB OTG? Or is it just the full size USB?

f) GPS. What's GPS like? Quick fix on satellites?

That's all I can think of for now. Any replies appreciated.

Hello !

I don't own one yet, but few easy answers I can give :

a) Of course, language selection is on.

b) As for the PF2, I guess the updates will be available OTA

c) Lots of universal cases with integrated KB are availabe on the market. PF2 didn't have any dedicated one;

e) PF2 had a special USB/MHL plug. The Infinity got back to a regular micro USB port. Lots of micro-USB to USB OTG cable aailable on the market.

Cheers =)

Be nice to know for sure. Plus, if it is OTA how does that work when the phone will be in the UK on a non-Taiwan network?

You misunderstand me. There seem to be many more cases (third party) around for the PF2 than the Infinity. I wanted to know if those PF2 cases work with the Infinity, or if there was some button/sensor issue that meant that they didn't.

OK. But what about things like HDMI out?

No the PadFone 2 cases will most likely not fit at all on the Infinity. However Asus has already launched a series of covers and protections themselves, and 3rd-party ones should show up any minute now if they haven't already, so you need not worry about that at all.

You can buy the official accessories here: http://www.asusparts.eu/partfinder/Asus/PadFone/PadFone%20Infinity/PadFone%20Infinity%20A80#Station

Thanks. So, what's the USB Adapter? And why is it more than twice the price of the OTG cable?

Thanks

English language options are there out of the box.

Yep, OTA. There has been two or three already.

Not used cases yet, I never do.

I'm in NZ, works fine here.

Has these bands:
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
4G Network LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600 / 2100

USB OTG support is there and very capable.

Regards HDMI out - it is not MHL this time. It is using a different standard called MyDP (so far only LG have also used it on the Nexus 4 and Optimus G Pro). There is only one manufacturer for those adapters and they are expensive right now. I actually got mine today, as it happens. Works well, and is equivalent spec to MHL 2.0 (2A charging to connected phone, 1080p 60Hz, 3D content).

GPS is fine, has GLONASS and locks are quick and strong.
